Wanna go back to high school?
Page 1 of 1 • Share •
Is it a good idea to go to high schools and speak about the misconceptions of homosexuality?
Wanna go back to high school?
I'm just putting this out there as a potential idea, but what do you guys and gals think about venturing out to area schools speaking about the misconceptions and stereotypes of homosexuality? I know at first it sounds so bland to do, but couple it with a few motivational speakers, potential actors provided by the LCCC Theater Department to act out some scenes and (if anyone is willing) your own story of getting though stereotypes and misconceptions and it might not be so bad.... Right?

Re: Wanna go back to high school?
Well of course this event would be age appropriate and geared more toward the elder, the junior and senior classes. I know not everyone is willing to accept mainly gearing it toward those two groups, but we have to look at it form another angle; not everyone is able to hear our message, not everyone is comfortable with what we have to say, and not everyone is ready.
agree, disagree, add to, anyone?

Re: Wanna go back to high school?
How would the presentations go? What would we actually say to them that they can't learn from Heath classes?
I'm cool with it and I like the idea (a lot), but high school-level teenagers (whether they're freshmen or senior) can be very immature and/or oblivious about the topic.

Re: Wanna go back to high school?
I think it's more speaking in regards to the stereotypes that still exist with those that are homosexuals. I get what you were saying in regards to teenagers, and being able to learn certain things in health class, but what the focus would be on is addressing stereotypes and not so much sex entirely.

Sounds to boring
Kids today are tired of being told what is right and wrong, they want to have a choice in who they are, and though you're not coming out and saying being gay isn't wrong so stop making fun of us, you're giving off that message. Kids today don't look at being gay as we did when we were in high school. they look at being gay as something that is normal or just not that big of a deal. So even though the message is a good message I think it needs to be a little bit more updated and polished.

Re: Wanna go back to high school?
Wow that's actually one of your nicer posts butt head lol. I completely understand where you are coming from and think it's actually a good to question how and why we are speaking about stereotypes, but still I have not heard an other ideas on what else we can do; how else we can deliver this message to the students.

Try this on for size
You know the more I think about it I stand by what I posted earlier, but also I agree with what you said. If we want to get this message out there we have to make it means something and have people care about it. How about not only talking about the misconceptions and stereotypes homosexuals, bisexuals etc. face in a more political way. The Constitution says we are all free when we all know we are not, African Americans fought to gain thier rights, Women did the same, what about making it our time starting with this?

Re: Wanna go back to high school?
Here's a fun question- do you think the highschools would actually LET us speak?
I know the kids won't mind hearing us, but the adults running the schools are still in the "homosexuality is wrong" mindset. They were raised to think that. I know there's NO WAY that Amherst would ever let us speak. Too many of the teachers are extremely conservative, and the parents used to call in when we had those marriage projects complaining because there weren't enough boy-girl pairs, and this daughter wasn't being paired with another girl, because it pushed a homosexual agenda and taught that that homosexuality is ok when it's a filthy sin.
(Welcome to my Social Studies class. And my Psychology class. And Health class, too. They started making groups instead of "couples".)
